Inaugural Regulator/Contender Fishing Tournament A Big Success

Montauk, N.Y. (September 2005) – A sensation of high energy and friendly competition filled the air at the first Regulator/Contender Shootout held out of the Montauk Yacht Club on New York’s Long Island this fall. Thirty-eight boats – 19 representing each brand – gathered at the shotgun start on Saturday, September 10, and the weather and fishing could not have been better. And while the “other guys” took home the trophy at the end of the three-day event, “the overall success was the best I’ve seen in a small boat tournament,” said Wyatt Lane, Regulator’s national sales manager. “I’ve talked to numerous people who praised the event, and everyone said they plan to come back next year and claim victory for their respective team. Ten years from now, we might be looking at a field of 60 or 100 boats and have one of the Northeast’s top tournaments.”

The contest pitted equal crews of Regulator and Contender anglers against one another and included fishing for both inshore and offshore species – namely fluke, bluefish, striped bass, shark (mako and thrasher), tuna (yellowfin, bluefin, longfin and bigeye) and mahi mahi. In addition to the award for the overall winning team, the tournament also awarded largest catch prizes during a barbecue on the final night.

Organized by Regulator dealer Jimmy Luttieri of Suffolk Marine Center in Babylon, New York, and Contender dealership White Water Marine in Sayville, New York, the event was several months in the planning, with boats and crews coming from as far away as Connecticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The competition is already heating up for next year, with teams from both camps working on their winning strategy.

“The spirit of the fishing community here is unbelievable. There’s so much drive to go out and enjoy the challenges of the sport. It’s really amazing,” said Lane. “One of the Regulators at this year’s tournament hooked a fish so late in the day that there was no way to get the fish back to the dock in time for the cut-off. Yet for the next seven hours, the crew fought the fish and didn’t return to the dock until 11:30 at night. One of the crewmembers then drove two hours home, packed his bags and caught a plane to work a trade show starting at 8 o’clock the next morning! You don’t find people with this commitment to fishing very often.”

Next year’s event is currently scheduled for September 8 to 10.
