An Owner’s Story: Luke Spicer

At Regulator, we’ve always believed that our boats bring people together and create lasting memories—but every so often, we get to see just how much those memories can shape someone’s future.

Back in 2018, Jim and Laura Spicer visited the Regulator factory in Edenton, NC, with their two young children to see their Regulator 31 in production. What we didn’t know then was that their son Luke would carry that day with him in more ways than one.

Fast forward to today: Luke is now a rising senior in high school, and he’s spent the last two summers working for Catawba Moorings, the same certified Regulator dealer his family ordered their boat from years ago. He’s become an avid boater and fisherman and has set his sights on earning his captain’s license once he turns 18.

Luke even took his senior photos aboard the family’s Regulator in front of Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie, proof that boating is a part of who he is.

“Regulator owners are family,” said Regulator founder & president Joan Maxwell. “We meet little kids on factory tours, and then we see them years later—growing up and creating their own adventures. It’s an incredible thing to witness, and it’s why we do what we do.”

We couldn’t be prouder to be part of that story. From our factory floor to the waters of Lake Erie and beyond, we’re honored to see the next generation of boaters growing up with Regulator—and taking the helm.

Tell us your favorite thing about owning a Regulator.

The community. Every Regulator owner is very friendly and we all know each other — and when people join the family, they are always greeted with a warm welcome.

Share your most memorable Regulator moment.  

My most memorable Regulator moment is when my Dad, Grandpa and I went fishing on Lake Erie. The waves were 6+ feet, so we considered not going out, but my Dad and I looked at each other and said, “We’re fine, we have a Regulator!” It ended up being one of the most fun and exciting days since we have had our Regulator.

And what about your factory visit? Tell us what stood out to you.

I think I was only 10 years old when my family visited the Regulator factory. I remember thinking how cool it was knowing how the employees prayed before shifts, prayed over our boat and gave us a Bible. And then they took us for lunch and ice cream!

We want to hear about your job. Tell us how you came to work with our dealer Catawba Moorings and what the experience has been like.

I have been working at Catawba Moorings for 2 years. It has been a very fun experience. I love seeing how much Regulators have changed since we ordered our 31 and even since we had our old 26 FS. My favorite part of the job is getting to occasionally drive a Regulator around for Moorings!
