An Owner's Story: Brody Smith

A 2001 Regulator 32 out of Yorktown, Virginia blends classic design with serious capability. The Carolina flare gives it a distinctive look, while the ride stays dry and comfortable, even when conditions get sporty. 

Brody Smith, and his dad, Mark, log 300 to 400 hours a year fishing and cruising in all types of conditions aboard their Regulator 32. They previously owned a 1986 Luhrs 29 Express, but after years without a boat, they returned to the water with Regulator, a natural choice for the way they fish the Chesapeake Bay and beyond.

Most days are spent fishing cobia, sheepshead, red drum, and flounder, with offshore runs to the Norfolk Canyon to target tuna and white marlin. A tower added in 2025 has elevated the boat’s fishability, especially for sight fishing.

The boat performed flawlessly, cruising comfortably at 25 knots in three to four-foot seas. 

Time on the water has strengthened the bond between Brody and Mark through a shared passion for fishing, maintaining the boat, and exploring year-round. It’s a legacy in the making, one Brody hopes to pass down to his kids someday.

They’re in the process of renaming the boat Rugged Rascal in honor of Brody’s late grandfather, carrying forward a name that traces back to a P-51 Mustang flown in World War II. It’s a way to honor that legacy and keep a piece of family history alive on the water.
