Charter Captain Q&A: Alex Defreitas, Reel Buzz Fishing Charters (@Fvreelbuzz)

When you fish for a living, you need a boat that can handle anything—and for this Scituate, MA captain, his Regulator center console boat hasn’t let him down.

With twin Yamaha 300s, he’s run his 29 hard—logging over 1,450 hours in his first 3 seasons. From cruising at 30 knots through 6-foot waves to chasing giants on Stellwagen Bank and in Cape Cod Bay, his Regulator crushes it.

In fact, on Capt. Alex’s very first trip, he landed a 105-inch, 740-pound tuna in Cape Cod Bay. Since then, he and his crew have been “leading the fleet,” proving that his Regulator is, in his words, “the best riding center console out there.”

We caught up with Defreitas as he closes out another summer charter season aboard his Regulator…

What’s your favorite thing about your Regulator?

Fishiest boat. The best. Hands down.

My favorite thing about my Regulator is how comfortably it gets us offshore to the tuna grounds, even in rough seas.

The best thing on long runs is the soft ride and incredible fishability—not to mention the big bow fishbox.

How did you land on buying a Regulator? What stood out to you?

I chose to go with Regulator after being on a friend’s Regulator. I noticed how well they ride in big seas. Comfort is key when you spend 14+ hours at sea at a time.

Inshore vs. Offshore - where do you spend most of your time? What do you typically catch?

We do a mix of inshore and offshore fishing–more offshore I’d say. We leave from Scituate Harbor and fish 20 to 70 miles offshore. We go out to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Cape Cod Bay.

How many hours are you running each season?

I do about 300+ hours a season, running charters and doing commercial striped bass / commercial bluefin.

How did you get into fishing?

I fished my whole life with my dad. He took me when I was little and I got obsessed. That’s what led to my career as a charter captain. I’ve been on the water daily since I was 17. I’m 25 now and still psyched to get after it every day.

Having the Regulator is the best part. The boat is a tank, everyone that comes on my boat says it's the best riding center consoles they have ever been on. I couldn’t agree more. Very grateful to be representing team Regulator.
